little late in the day. In fact, it comes a little more than a week after a number of the Cupid-struck boys and girls turned into Subodhs (Azad Dadarkar of Dil Chahta Hai!) for one day, and gave each other dil-shaped balloons on Valentine’s Day.Did you cringe? Phew, thank God, a few like-minded people do read this blog.
Chanced upon a pre-V-Day report on how the Sena had threatened the youth not to celebrate Valentine’s Day because it, cough cough, corrupts traditional values. A fine job that is being done by the Sena indeed … after all, preserving our ‘traditional values’ through vandalism is a lot more important than building better roads, ensuring that the citizens of Mumbai receive their basic necessities and so on.
These protests never cease to amuse me. At the end of the day, the protests are a violation of every individual’s right to choose. Yes, it is a commercialised concept and a rather cheesy one, at that. But at the end of the day, it is every individual’s decision whether he or she wants to celebrate it or not. What irks these self-appointed saviours of our culture if I want to fill the coffers of Archies & Co?
The funny bit is the fact that according to these saviours, V-Day becomes acceptable if it is renamed Prem Divas.
Maybe it is the Sooraj Barjatya effect, but I wonder what the difference would be. They say that Valentine’s Day is a ‘foreign’ festival, so does a mere change of name mean such a drastic change? Now I know why Ekta Kapoor’s serials are spelt the way they are!
Next, they may want to rename Christmas … they will say that the concept of Santa Claus is a foreign one (apologies to Christians, but that is simply how narrow-minded these saviours tend to be). They may have an Indian Sant Kallu instead of Santa Claus. Is there any end to this nonsense?
The end of this nonsense, probably, is more nonsense. Shiv Sena supreme Balasaheb Thackeray suggested that V-Day can be renamed after Indian legendary lovers like Laila-Majnu or Heer-Ranjha. Now I know how to ask out the girl I fancy. Next year, on the 14th of February, I’ll walk up to her and sing ‘Laila, oh Laila, kaisi tu laila …’ What’s more, if she agrees to be my ‘laila’, I’ll sing ‘Main laila laila chillaoonga, kurta phaad ke’.

I Agree!! Totally and completely agree! I've always felt that its really quite hypocritic to protest against events like V-day...i mean, as you said, it really Is a personal choice and no one has the right to even question that...let alone trying to repress it!
Having said that, I also agree that the entire concept of Vday has been totally commercialised and its almost sick to see young boys and girls being sucked up in the whirlpool of superficiality that is attached with this day! What we need is to strike a balance...and that i think will need some time!
Well...hopefully the country and the self appointed guardians of our culture would see that renaming a day in hindi does not make in less or more acceptable...
Good Read! Good Food for thought!

Hehe could not agree more. I am not a big fan of V-day myself. But still, if someone else likes to celebrate it, I should not have any problem with it.
Sena is a bunch of people who don't learn from mistakes. They have consistently lost base in their stronghold - Mumbai.
This is another example of politicians exploiting emotive issues for petty political gains. In this case it is nothing but suicide since it does not serve that purpose.
That last para was too good.. ROFL...
Munir
as usual! vey true!
love da last para!
keep up da good work.
Hey, my comment is very similar to others... It is so so true .... And I love the way u've put up the last para. The first line is predictable but the second song is hilarious. .. Cheers !!!
Hmmm...
Something i feel very strongly about. It's a relief to see this kind of work from you! Keep it up!
Congratulations! You have just proved the theory that there is no limit to human stupidity. Your post is an orgy of stultifying cacophonous verbal depravity; an exercise in literary impotence, and an offense to all of good taste and decency.
I used to think that you were a gibbering idiot. Now, after reading your latest post, I have a much lower opinion of you. You're just another Internet-addicted idiot suffering from diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the mind. Anyway, who was talking to you or even taking you under consideration? Oh well, as the late Douglas Adams said: "You live and learn. At any rate, you live."
Calling you dull is a gross underestimation of just how tedious you are. You have the personality of a damp sponge and the appeal of a moldy sweat sock. You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers. Maybe you wouldn't read like such a pathetic loser if you weren't living proof that stupid people should not breed; if your weren't so fat that when you walk down the street, everyone yells "Earthquake!", or if your face wasn't the strongest form of natural contraception available. Who am I kidding? You would.
In conclusion, as your clue meter is reading zero, lets see if this registers: Get lost, creep!
[kiddin dude, its well written...represents what a majority of the youth are actually thinking about...cheers!]
Heh Heh..
Yeah.. I wanted to laugh too when I read Rashtriya Prem Divas.. :P :P :P
Nice observations there!! :)
Keep it up!

ok first of all.. thanks for inspiring me to start writing.. ill always owe you one..
secondly my comments on this one are a lot similar to the others.. i too think that it is a personal choice and it is stupid of the shiv sena to do what they do on valentines.. celebrating valentines is not a crime and someone chould discipline them and put them in place or they should simply be asked to solve the pollution problem at the end of the third day of diwali.. but no one is going to do it..
anyway nice one.. and im really glad that you are actually writing on things that matter in life as oppsed to bollywood.. which was only what you did earlier.. keep it up.. cheers.. raunakk..
good one... well written.... and all that
but how do u expect the sena to make better roads etc etc when they are not in power.
they are just doin they can best do with the only power they have which is manpower
cheers......heavy metal rulz
sushant
P.S:- i did go for GIR and it was awesome. hehehehe
You can throw my comment away as churlish but I truly cannot agree with you entirely.
While I feel that this really loud noise against an overt expression of one's love for someone in particular is quite unjustified, I still cannot ignore the fact that we have an ethical framework of our own.
While I cannot support the vandals who rip the day into a nightmare, I cannot entirely be on the side of those twittering birds who think a kiss on FC Road is an expression of true love.
I'm a fence-sitter. Or you can say I'm in no-man's land.
Hard hitting article, though. Very crisply put... Loved the style.
